Philosophy of Care

Patients want high quality medical care, and they want it provided in an efficient and timely manner. They also want a health care provider that values communication; one that communicates with clarity and compassion. I share these beliefs. It is my goal to provide care that reflects these values.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Stollenwerk's clinical interests:

Pulmonary Medicine:

  1. Interventional Pulmonology: advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy, airway interventions, and pleural disease management
  2. Lung Cancer: diagnosis, staging, and management

Critical Care Medicine:

  1. Medical critical care
  2. Multidisciplinary care for critically ill
    subspecialty patients
  3. Bedside ICU procedures for the diagnosis and management of critical illness

Point-of-Care Ultrasound:

  1. Independent of the specific disease being managed, I am interested in the application of ultrasound performed by the clinician at the time of direct patient care. This application of point-of-care ultrasound can improve the safety of medical procedures, improve diagnostic accuracy, and help direct patient management and further diagnostic testing.

Research/Academic Interests

As a clinician-educator, my academic interests focus on bedside teaching, as well as course and curriculum development.

Specifically, I am interested in the following:

  1. Developmental learning theory for training future physicians: I am primarily interested in teaching learners the skills they need to become better future clinicians. However, I am particularly interested in teaching students, and young physicians, how to become better leaders and teachers themselves. It is also my goal for learners to develop the skills necessary to continue to learn after they finish training.
  2. Teaching procedures: In additional to teaching basic and advanced procedures, I focus on improving procedure safety and teaching less invasive procedural approaches.
  3. Expanding the application of point-of-care ultrasound: I am interested in expanding use in both in the inpatient and outpatient clinical setting, and for diagnosis and for therapeutic procedures.
