Philosophy of Care

In general medicine, I enjoy taking care of the whole person whether they are in the clinic or hospital. Listening to my patients helps me understand how I can help support them, from preventive care for staying healthy to diagnosing and treating disease. Since tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death and worsens many diseases, I am dedicated to helping people and our communities become smoke and tobacco-free. Quitting tobacco for good can be one of the most difficult things to do but it's never too late to connect with positive support and enjoy the immediate health benefits.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Tong is a general internist who helps care for patients in the clinic and hospital. She has a special clinical interest in tobacco treatment and is the Medical Director for the Stop Tobacco Program at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. She works closely with tobacco treatment partners in UCD Health Management Education (livinghealthy.ucdavis.edu) and the California Smokers' Helpline (nobutts.org, now Kick It California).

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Tong's research interests are in tobacco control policy and cessation, with special interests in health services delivery of tobacco treatment, interventions to address tobacco/cancer disparities, and the behavioral impact of smoke and tobacco-free policies. She has founded and led "UC Quits" and now "CA Quits", a statewide project funded by the California Tobacco Control Program, which supports the integration of tobacco treatment into health systems in partnership with the California Department of Health Care Services. She has led tobacco interventions targeting diverse populations including college students, Chinese smokers and household nonsmokers, Medi-Cal members, and patients with cancer.
