What to Expect on Your Surgery Day

The Same Day Surgery Center is conveniently located next to Parking Structure 2, adjacent to the Ellison Ambulatory Care (ACC). Patient and visitor parking is available on levels 1, 2 and 3. Patients with disabled placards or plates will find parking on all levels, near the elevators.

Preparing for Surgery

Initial Contact

About 1-2 weeks before your procedure date, you will be contacted by a registered nurse or anesthesia resident. They will discuss your medical history, current medications, and any previous experiences that you’ve had with anesthesia.

Day-Before Call

You will receive a phone call from a Same Day Surgery Center nurse one business day before your surgery. The nurse will review your pre-surgery instructions such as arrival time, when to stop eating and drinking, and other details specific to your surgery.

Before You Arrive

Please note that you must arrange a ride home with a responsible adult after your surgery. You should also have someone care for you at home for the first 24 hours following surgery.

Bring:

  • Your health insurance card.
  • A list of the medications you are taking.
  • Any medical devices you use, such as a CPAP.
  • Please wear loose fitting comfortable clothing.

Leave at home:

  • Do not wear jewelry, makeup, perfume, lotions, deodorants, colognes or aftershave to your procedure.

  • Visiting in the Same Day Surgery Center pre-operative and post-operative areas is limited to adults.
  • Children under 16 years of age are allowed in the waiting room. but not allowed in pre-op and post-op areas.
  • Use of mobile phones is not allowed in the pre-op and post-op areas.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your surgery, please contact your surgeon.

Arrival at the Surgery Center

When you arrive at the Same Day Surgery Center, proceed through the sliding glass doors and go through the door on the right to the reception area. You will be greeted by our staff and will fill out paperwork upon arrival.

  • After check-in, please have a seat. When it is time to start preparing you for surgery, a nurse or other staff member will find you in the waiting room and escort you to a pre-op room.
  • A support person can go with you in the pre-op room but will be escorted to the waiting room when you are taken to the operating room.
  • Staff will collect visitor contact info and provide parking and visitation details.
  • We can also provide information about local lodging, parking, nearby restaurants, and hospital resources like chaplain services.

During Surgery

Waiting Room and Visitor Policy

  • Your family members or loved ones may wait for you while you are undergoing surgery.
  • The electronic patient status board will keep your loved ones updated with your surgery status. The board will allow them to track your progress through pre-op, surgery, and recovery.
  • Children cannot be left unattended in the waiting room.

After Surgery

After your surgery, you will be taken to the post-op/recovery room. There, nurses and physicians will monitor your comfort and recovery until you have fully recovered from anesthesia and are ready to be discharged home.
