Your surgeon will meet with you to explain your procedure, what you will experience and what to expect. Your care team will give you detailed instructions for preparing for surgery.
Be sure to give your care team a complete list of medications and supplements you take. You may need to stop some of them before surgery. You will get instructions about when to stop eating and drinking before your procedure.
For most reconstructive procedures, you will receive anesthesia, so you won’t be awake or feel any pain during the surgery. Your surgeon will let you know before surgery how long your procedure will take.
After your procedure, you will stay in a recovery room while your care team monitors you. You may need to stay overnight or longer, depending on the type of surgery. You will get medication to help with pain.
Be sure to follow all the recovery instructions provided by your care team. Contact your surgeon if you have any questions and attend all of your follow-up appointments.
You will need to take time off work and your normal activities. The amount of time you take off depends on the type of procedure you have. Your care team can advise you about how much time to take off work and how long to rest before returning to exercise or other activities.
You will need to change the bandages or dressings covering your incisions. Your care team will provide you with clean dressings and let you know how often to change them. If you have a drain tube, follow your surgeon’s instructions for caring for it.
Your surgeon will tell you when to restart your regular medications after surgery. Take pain medications as prescribed. Avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking pain medications. If you have narcotic pain medications, do not drive while taking them.
Call your surgeon if you have a fever, excessive bleeding from your incision, swelling and redness around your incision or painful swelling in your legs.
