At UC Davis Health, we treat the full range of gastrointestinal (mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum and anus) and hepatobiliary (liver, gallbladder, pancreas and bile ducts) diseases.
Achalasia is a swallowing disorder where food has difficulty passing from your esophagus to your stomach. It’s related to problems with the nerves and muscles in your esophagus.
Colon cancer is the most common digestive system cancer. But cancer can also develop in your esophagus, stomach, intestines and in your hepatobiliary system.
GERD, or acid reflux, happens when food and stomach acid backs up into your esophagus from your stomach. Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD.
Gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) occurs when food doesn’t move from your stomach to your small intestine as it should. It is the result of problems with the nerves and muscles in your stomach wall.
IBD describes two conditions: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Both disorders cause chronic inflammation in your gastrointestinal tract. IBD increases your risk of colon cancer.
IBS affects your bowel muscles. It can cause chronic constipation, diarrhea or both. Unlike IBD, IBS isn’t related to inflammation in your GI tract.
SIBO develops when too much bacteria grows in your small intestine. The condition can happen if food stays in your small intestine for too long, instead of passing into your large intestine as it should.
Stomach ulcers, also called peptic ulcers, are sores that form in your stomach lining. They can also form in the lining of your esophagus or small intestine. The most common causes are bacterial infections and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
We offer a range of noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures, allowing us to tailor care to your needs and preferences.
We use radiofrequency energy to burn away abnormal tissue in the lining of your esophagus to prevent cancer.
An injection of a neurotoxin into the muscles of your esophagus can help treat achalasia.
A colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure to examine your large intestine. We can detect and remove colon polyps and early stage cancers during a colonoscopy.
ERCP combines X-rays and endoscopy to examine and treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.
An electronic device implanted under your skin stimulates your stomach muscles and relieves gastroparesis symptoms.
We may place a metal tube called a stent inside your esophagus or another area of your gastrointestinal tract. Stents open areas blocked by tumors or other obstructions.
Specialized physical therapists help you strengthen your pelvic floor muscles so you can better control urinary or bowel incontinence.
Photodynamic therapy uses a light-activated drug to destroy precancerous or cancerous cells in your esophagus.
Between 60 and 70 million people in the U.S. are affected by digestive diseases. These disorders result in more than 20 million hospitalizations each year.
Most digestive problems don’t require surgery. Many disorders improve with dietary adjustments, lifestyle modifications, medication and other nonsurgical approaches. Many diseases, which in the past required surgery, can instead be treated with endoscopic options which we offer.
Seek immediate medical attention if you have severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, a high fever or blood in your vomit or stool.
