What Is Cardiovascular Disease?

Cardiovascular diseases affect your heart and blood vessels. Untreated cardiovascular conditions can lead to a heart attack, stroke and other serious problems. These conditions account for a leading cause of death in men.

Common Types of Cardiovascular Disease:

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Buildup of plaques (fatty deposits) in the walls of your heart’s arteries can lead to coronary artery disease (CAD). The plaques cause inflammation and make your arteries narrower, which reduces blood flow. CAD can lead to a heart attack.

Heart Failure

Also known as congestive heart failure, this condition develops when your heart can’t pump blood as well as it should. Poor blood circulation deprives your tissues of oxygen and nutrients.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Plaque buildup in the walls of your arteries reduces blood flow to your limbs, leading to peripheral artery disease (PAD). This causes less oxygen and nutrients to reach your extremities.

Stroke

A stroke happens when there’s bleeding or blocked blood flow in your brain. It is a life-threatening condition that can be fatal or lead to disabilities such as paralysis.

Why Cardiovascular Health in Men Matters

In the U.S., 1 out of 4 deaths among men are related to cardiovascular disease. Many of these deaths are preventable with the right treatment and lifestyle changes.

  • High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke.
  • Diabetes puts you at greater risk for heart disease.
  • A healthy diet can lower your risk.
  • Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol and lowering stress can also help.
