What Is Huntington’s Disease?

Huntington’s disease is an inherited neurodegenerative disease that damages and destroys nerve cells in your brain. The condition causes involuntary movements (a movement disorder). It also affects your thoughts and moods.

Huntington’s disease is progressive, meaning symptoms gradually worsen. While there isn’t a cure, certain therapies can improve your quality of life.

At the UC Davis Huntington’s Disease Clinic, we offer compassionate care for patients and their loved ones. Our clinic is one of the largest in the country, serving a high volume of patients and families. This means you benefit from our extensive experience helping people with Huntington’s disease.

You receive advanced services at Northern California’s only Level 1 Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) Center of Excellence. This designation reflects our deep expertise and broad scope of services.

Huntington’s Disease Causes

People with Huntington’s disease inherit a changed (mutated) gene called the HTT gene. The gene change destroys nerve cells (neurons) in the brain that control movements, thinking and memory.

Gene Change

The mutated HTT gene affects a protein called huntingtin that typically supports nerve cell function. Abnormal proteins form and destroy neurons. A parent with Huntington’s disease has a 50% chance of passing the gene mutation to a child.
