Metabolic health refers to how well your body generates and processes energy from food. It is measured by looking at five factors: your waist circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels.
If three or more of these factors are outside the healthy range, you may be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. This condition can lead to heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other health issues.
For cisgender women, a large waist measures 35 inches around or more. For transgender women, a large waist measures at least 40 inches around.
High blood pressure has values of at least 130 over 80 (130/80).
High blood glucose involves fasting blood glucose level of 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or more. If your fasting blood glucose is higher than 125 mg/dL, you may have type 2 diabetes.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the “good” cholesterol. A low HDL level is less than 50 mg/dL if you are a cisgender woman and less than 40 mg/dL if you are a transgender woman.
Your triglyceride (fat) levels are high if they are 150 mg/dL or greater.
