I believe in providing compassionate and expert care for my patients. My driving force is for my patients to obtain optimal outcomes and relief from their problems. I rely on current, data-driven best practices for my surgical recommendations as well as the rich expertise of my colleagues and mentors to ensure my patients do well.
I strive to listen thoroughly and communicate clearly to explain my clinical reasoning and recommendations so that patients completely understand their options and what to expect. I love showing pictures of anatomy to my patients and reviewing their imaging results with them so that they better understand their issues. I treat my patients with the same respect and kindness as I would want my own family to receive.
I am happy to see patients via Video Visit as well.
Dr. Lyo specializes in minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) and traditional open techniques to address obesity, foregut diseases such as GERD, achalasia, and hiatal hernias, as well as abdominal wall and groin hernias, and gallbladder disease.
She is fellowship-train in minimally invasive surgery, having trained under Dr. John Hunter, a world-expert and pioneer in foregut surgery. Dr. Lyo has expertise in:
- Foregut: esophageal dilation and stenting, Heller myotomy for achalasia, anti-reflux procedures, hiatal hernias, gastric fundoplications and gastric resection, feeding tube placement, gastroparesis
- Bariatrics: gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revisional/redo surgery
- Hernia: complex abdominal wall reconstruction, component separation, groin/inguinal hernias
- Biliary: gallbladder removal, bile duct exploration, laparoscopic-assisted ERCP
Dr. Lyo's research focuses on understanding the interactions between the gut microbiome and human host, specifically on how the microbiome contributes to obesity and obesity-related diseases. By better understanding this area, she aims to improve the management of obesity and outcomes after bariatric surgery. She also performs research on surgical outcomes as well as education. She has received prestigious research awards throughout her career, and while on faculty at UC Davis.
Dr. Lyo has an extensive biomedical research background and holds a Master degree in Translational Medicine from UC Berkeley and UCSF. She is committed to developing innovative devices and products to bring into clinical practice.
