What Are Contraception and Family Planning?

Contraception is also called birth control. It involves methods of preventing pregnancy. Family planning is your ability to have the number of children you want at the time you desire. Using contraception before and after pregnancies can help you with family planning.

Decisions about having children are deeply personal. We’re here to help you understand all your options.

Medications and procedures that can help with your family planning include:

  • Reversible contraception: Birth control you can stop using or remove if you want to become pregnant.
  • Emergency contraception: Birth control you can take within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
  • Permanent contraception: Surgical procedures that permanently prevent pregnancy.
  • Abortion: The termination of an unwanted pregnancy.
