Philosophy of Care

I believe that every patient deserves to have a frank discussion about the risks and benefits of various treatment options — including the option not to have surgery. Every patient has their own goals and risk tolerance, so we will work together to formulate a plan which best matches your needs. Regardless of which decision you make, I will always put your safety and well-being first.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Powelson is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who completed fellowships in hand surgery, burn surgery, and surgical critical care. Though he maintains a broad plastic surgery practice and offers a variety of procedures, he has a special interest in working with burn survivors to restore both form and function. Additionally, he is the Plastic Surgery Director of the Advanced Wound Clinic and is an expert in pressure injury reconstruction. He treats both adults and children through his practices at UC Davis Medical Center and Shriners Children’s Northern California.

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Powelson is interested in improving outcomes for patients undergoing burn reconstruction surgery. He is particularly interested in optimizing upper extremity function after severe burns and is uniquely qualified to investigate this topic as he is one of the only surgeons in the United States with fellowship training in both hand and burn surgery. Additionally, he is passionate about improving burn care globally and travels frequently to developing countries, where he operates with and teaches reconstructive techniques to local surgeons.
