Instructions and application process

Information for U.S. medical graduates

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment: 1) graduate of medical schools in the US and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); 2) graduate of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the US accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).  Applicants are considered and appointments are made by the Chair of the Department of Surgery subject to the rules and regulations of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Details of the NRMP can be found in the Directory of Approved Internships and Residencies.

The Surgery Residency Program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  We will only accept applications through this process.

Our Categorical Program offers virtual interviews on the Universal Offer Date.  There is an optional 2nd look visit offered for applicants we have interviewed.  This is typically coordinated near the end of the interview season, generally in February.

Our Preliminary Program is available to individuals who are seeking a one-year general surgery internship, especially candidates applying to advanced PGY-2 residency positions at UC Davis or elsewhere.  Eligible preliminary candidates are offered telephone interviews, typically sometime in February.

Required application material:

ERAS Common Application Form, must include

  1. A curriculum vitae and a one page personal statement
  2. Official medical school transcript
  3. USMLE, Step I, Step II (if available)
  4. Three letters of recommendation.
    1. One from the chair of the Department of Surgery.
    2. Two letters from basic science and other faculty who know you well.
