As inland Northern California's only academic medical center and only level 1 trauma center, the UC Davis medical center provides patients with access to the latest technological advances and investigational drugs and therapies.

As the main tertiary care referral center for a 33-county area of more than six million residents, the 627-bed hospital and 150-plus specialty clinics provide a diverse patient population for a well-rounded medical school education. UC Davis Health admits tens of thousands of patients per year and handles nearly 1 million visits, and the medical center’s emergency room can see more than 200 patients per day on average.

Our program at UC Davis offers excellent career outcomes with 4 out of 5 general surgery residents pursuing fellowships after graduation.  Most residents pursuing fellowships were matched to their top ranked programs, with 50% being accepted into their number one choice.  Residents who chose not to pursue fellowship successfully enter private practice or military service confidently and competently with the skills they’ve learned here.

  • A wide variety and number of surgical cases at one of the nation’s best ranked hospitals.
  • Flexible and multidisciplinary cross-training as you learn from more than 75 full-time faculty.
  • Opportunities to combine surgical training with clinical, basic science, translational, and outcomes research.
  • Designated time between 3rd and 4th clinical year to pursue fully funded research interests or work on career development.

Scientific curiosity and a strong commitment to improving our patients’ quality of life guide our Department of Surgery researchers.  Proudly ranked 13th by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research on National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to US Medical Schools, our research program encompasses basic science, translation and health services investigation.  We excel at translating scientific discoveries and new technologies into improved patient care.
