Professor

Shu-Fen Wung is a professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, where she contributes to the Healthy Aging in a Digital World initiative. Wung instructs students in the PhD program and mentors a diverse group of students, including those entering the nursing profession, doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, and early-career faculty in nursing and engineering. Wung’s teaching philosophy focuses on fostering creativity, adaptability and critical thinking by integrating innovative ideas, technologies and methods into the learning environment. 

Wung is a board-certified acute care nurse practitioner with over 25 years of research and clinical experience. Her primary focus includes digital health innovations, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in nursing, and precision monitoring strategies aimed at improving care for older adults with multiple chronic conditions. Wung leads interdisciplinary teams in studying wearable and contactless sensors for smart home applications, as well as AI-enabled monitoring tools to support aging in place. She has secured funding for more than 35 research projects from prominent federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, as well as from professional organizations, state resources, and internal funding sources. In recognition of her research contributions, Wung was named a Fellow of the American Association of Nursing (FAAN) in 2005. 

Prior to joining UC Davis, Wung was a nursing professor with a joint appointment in the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona. Wung received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the University of Arizona Asian American Faculty, Staff, and Alumni Association in 2005. Wung obtained her Master of Science in Nursing and her PhD in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco. In 2002, she participated as a fellow in the Summer Genetics Institute at the NIH. She has lectured at various universities and medical centers both in the US and abroad. She has also served as a reviewer for grant proposals for several professional organizations, including those associated with the NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.
