Graduate school can be challenging, particularly for students managing family, school, and financial responsibilities. The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing is committed to supporting students with diverse life experiences and the potential to make a significant impact. We offer various financial aid options to ensure that the most qualified, diverse, and driven students can pursue their degrees.

All students are encouraged to seek multiple forms of financial support. Detailed financial aid information is provided to admitted students as part of their offer. Students are advised to apply as early as possible to maximize their opportunities.

Tuition and fees

Tuition and fees are set by the Regents of the University of California and can change without notice. Tuition is determined based on residency and degree type (academic or professional). Some programs are classified as Self-Supporting Degree Programs (SSDP), which means they have different fee structures compared to state-supported programs.

UC Davis internal fellowships

A variety of fellowships are available for students with different backgrounds, research interests, and undergraduate majors. These fellowships are competitive and are offered across the UC Davis campus. For more information, visit UC Davis Graduate Studies Internal Fellowship.

General financial aid resources

Contact the UC Davis Health Financial Aid Office for information about scholarships, awards, and loan-repayment options, including:

This office provides information about various financial aid resources available for clinical education, including grants, scholarships, fellowships, loan programs, and short-term loans. Both federal and state resources offer flexible repayment options, including income-based and income-contingent repayment plans, as well as loan-forgiveness benefits. Short-term and interest-free loans are also available to enrolled students. A member of this office can assist with understanding and applying for these programs.

Students are also encouraged to seek private scholarships and external funding. For more information, visit the UC Davis Graduate Studies External Support Resources page or use online scholarship databases such as collegeboard.org.

For information regarding the cancellation of registration, withdrawal from a program, and fee refunds, please refer to the UC Davis policy webpage.

Veteran benefits

School of Nursing programs qualify for a number of Veteran Benefits. Visit the Office of the University Registrar to see if your specific funding applies to your program of choice. Please note: Self-Supporting Degree Programs (SSDP), which includes DNP-FNP, DNP-NA, MEPN, PA and UC PMHNP programs, do not qualify for Cal Vet Fee Waivers.  Please reach out to ourveterans@ucdavis.edu if you have any questions.

Financial aid tips

  • Credit-based loans are a part of most financial aid packages.
  • Check your credit through free credit score checks from TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax.
  • To improve your credit score and qualify for loans, pay off credit card debt before starting graduate school. Plan ahead as credit scores take time to update.
  • Interest rates are affected by your credit ratings.
  • Financial aid should be used solely for school tuition and fees, not for paying off credit card debt.
  • To apply for federal student loans, scholarships, and grants, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Program-specific financial aid information

Below is information pertaining to specific programs offered at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.

Financial support: Each student receives financial support for in-state tuition and fees. Specific details are provided as part of the admission offer.

Tuition and fees: The DNP-FNP program is a Self-Supporting Degree Program (SSDP). For more details, visit the Office of Budget and Institutional Analysis, professional degrees.

Tuition and fees: The estimated tuition and fees for 2025-2026 can be found on the UC Davis Finance and Business page. Please note this information will be updated in the spring of 2025 once 2025-2026 systemwide tuition and fee levels have been posted.

Tuition loan repayment opportunity: UC Davis Health is currently offering signing bonuses and retention payments to CRNA employees and is actively pursuing development of a tuition loan repayment program for graduates of the Doctor of Nursing Practice – Nurse Anesthesia degree program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. CRNAs will be an important part of the expanding UC Davis Health care team and graduates of the School of Nursing DNP-Nurse Anesthesia degree program will be key contributors in creating this future. More information on this proposed loan repayment opportunity will be available in 2025.

Financial support: PhD students admitted in fall 2024 receive support for University of California in-state tuition, fees, and a stipend for start-up expenses. Additional stipends may be available for years 2-4, pending funding availability.

External funding: Students are encouraged to work with their graduate advisor or other faculty regarding these opportunities or any other financial aid opportunities they may qualify for. The School of Nursing encourages students in the Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate Programs to apply for T32 funding or additional scholarships, fellowships, and extramural funding to expand their professional and academic portfolio. If a student receives funding from external sources that stipulates fee remission as part of the award, the School of Nursing will consider that source of funds to cover fees and tuition rather than funds from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Internal fellowships through Graduate Studies: Continuing graduate students apply via the Annual Internal Fellowship Competition for Continuing Graduate Students page. The competition opens in fall and awards funding for the following academic year.

Pre-doctoral fellowship - National Research Service Award: Students who anticipate full-time study and are U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply for an Individual Pre-Doctoral National Research Service Award (NRSA) through the National Institutes of Health. Copies of instructions and SF424 (R&R) application for NRSAs are available for download. Guides are provided on the website to help applicants with the process. Doctoral students should work closely with their research mentor and the Associate Dean for Research to determine their eligibility for these types of programs.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Fund: A new $3 million investment from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation aims to reverse that downward trend. It offers to lower the cost for students in the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. In addition to substantial tuition packages for up to five years of full-time study, the funding provides:

  • Travel for conference presentations
  • Start-up awards
  • Research-related expenses
  • Dissertation assistance

T-32 pre-doctoral trainee support: Newly available in 2024, students interested in health equity research are encouraged to apply for support through the School’s T-32 training program, called the UC Davis Research to Advance Connected and Community Health Equity (ReACH Equity) Predoctoral Training Program. ReACH is led by Professor Leigh Anne Simmons.
