Associate Professor

Roschelle “Shelly” Fritz, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N.Roschelle “Shelly” Fritz is an associate professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. She teaches informatics, research methods, dissertation seminars, and lectures on the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence in the delivery of care. She mentors graduate students across multiple disciplines with research interests at the intersection of health technology and health equity.

Fritz’s research supports the Healthy Aging in a Digital World Initiative, a UC Davis Big Idea. She envisions a world where older adults can age in the place of their choosing. Her contributions to science include developing the Fritz Method to support training machine learning models aimed at detecting changes in health states using sensor-based data, designing information dashboards for clinicians, understanding older adults’ perceptions of smart homes, and developing conceptual frameworks for nursing research and practice involving technologies featuring artificial intelligence.

Prior to joining the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, Fritz was an associate professor at Washington State University – Vancouver where she founded the Nurse Technology Enhanced Care at Home (NTECH) lab and taught community health, philosophy of nursing science, informatics, and mentored undergraduate honor’s students and graduate students in nursing, computer science and psychology. She completed the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators for mid-career faculty.

Fritz earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science Degree from Washington State University, a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Walden University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Walla Walla University. As a doctoral student, she completed the National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate Education Research and Training Fellowship and was awarded Outstanding PhD Student in Nursing.

Fritz’s work led to her induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, Gerontological Society of America, International Society of Gerontechnology, Western Institute of Nursing, Delta Chi Chapter-at-Large and Sigma Theta Tau International. Her nearly 40 scholarly publications appear in national and international nursing, medical gerontology, computer science and psychology research journals.
