What Is ENT?

ENT is another name for otolaryngology, which focuses on treating ear, nose and throat conditions. Otolaryngologists, also called ear, nose and throat doctors, specialize in medical treatments and surgery for head and neck concerns.

Four Main Areas of ENT Care:

Ear

Otolaryngologists medically and surgically treat ear conditions. These include balance problems, cysts, ear infections, hearing loss and tumors. Specialized providers called otologists focus on ear disorders and neurotologists offer surgery for nerves connecting the ear and brain.

Nose

ENT providers focus on care for your nasal cavity and sinuses. They treat conditions including deviated septum, nasal polyps or tumors, sinus infections, sleep apnea and smell disorders.

Throat

Otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists provide diagnosis and treatment for voice disorders and swallowing disorders. These conditions include airway narrowing, chronic cough, vocal cord growths and vocal fold dysfunction and paralysis.

Head and Neck

ENT specialists treat conditions that impact the head and neck area. These include cosmetic problems, head and neck cancer, non-cancerous (benign) tumors and deformities of the face and head.
