NRS 208AY Philosophy of Science and History of PhD/Nursing Science: This course introduces how to think like a scientist, history of nursing research, and the philosophy of science. It highlights debates about scientific research that coincided with the founding of Nursing Science in the middle of the 20th century. 3
NRS 208BY Logic and Scientific Inference: This course introduces concepts used in scientific research, critical thinking skills to examine the association between concepts and empirical evidence, and identifying new concepts that can be the analytic foundations of new research questions. 3
NRS 208CY Theoretical and Conceptual Frameworks in Nursing and Healthcare: This course uses an applied approach to introduce common theoretical and conceptual frameworks used in nursing and health sciences, including those used in medical sociology, psychology and behavioral sciences, and population health.  3
NRS 200AY Quantitative Design and Data Collection in Nursing and Healthcare: This course introduces quantitative study designs, as well as common methods for sampling, data collection, and instrument selection. Implications of various design and methods choices on causal inference, internal and external validity, and ethical considerations are discussed. 3
NRS 200BY Quantitative Research Methods in Nursing and Healthcare: This course provides an overview of foundational approaches to describing and analyzing quantitative data. The focus of this course is on understanding assumptions and appropriate selection of basic descriptive and inferential statistics, and interpreting and communicating the results. 3

Applied Quantitative Analysis in Nursing and Healthcare: This course offers hands-on experience in the practice of quantitative data analysis. Students will develop a research question that can be addressed using quantitative methods, identify an appropriate dataset, prepare the data, conduct a secondary analysis, and report the results.

Note: based on student research interest, students are required to take either 200CY or 207CY. Students may elect to take both.

NRS 207AY Introduction to Qualitative Design in Nursing and Healthcare: This course provides an introduction to qualitative principles, epistemology and three major approaches (grounded theory, ethnography, and phenomenology) by appraising relevant literature in order to describe key components and practices. 3
NRS 270BY Intermediate Qualitative Research Methods in Nursing and Healthcare: This course builds on NRS 207A by examining in more depth appropriate ways to frame qualitative research questions and collect and analyze data to address important knowledge gaps in the health sciences. Interactive exercises prepare students for considering independent research utilizing qualitative approaches. 3

Advanced Qualitative Research Methods in Nursing and Healthcare: This course offers hands-on experience in the practice of qualitative research. It provides opportunities to address the implications of selecting a design and data collection and analytical techniques by conducting a “small pilot.” This course requires intensive reading, writing, and fieldwork. (3 units)

NRS 209Y Research Methods in Health Informatics: This course provides an introduction to empirical methods that are applicable to health informatics covering various disruptive technologies and study designs, and delineates [or elucidates, or explains] the planning, development and evaluation processes used in health informatics research.  3
NRS 353V Improving Patient and Population Health: The course highlights health outcomes with a focus on promoting health equity among populations through a transformative and iterative process. The course focuses on health disparities/inequities related to health status and access to care for treatment and prevention and critical appraisal of existing interventions and care delivery models to improve population health. It incorporates the historical, current and inter-connected context of social determinates of health, health disparities and equity/inequity related to treatment and prevention. 3
NRS 299 Research and Writing: Students enroll with a research faculty mentor preparing written work for one-on-one feedback and substantive review of their emerging written proposal. Offered quarterly in Year 1 and 2. 1
NRS 293Y Proposal Development Seminar: The seminar series provides opportunities for students to engage in facilitated discussion, achieve program-specific milestones, and share work-in-progress for peer and faculty feedback. In Years 1 and 2, program-specific milestones lead to preparation of a high-quality dissertation proposal and successful completion of the Qualifying Examination. Offered quarterly in Year 1 and 2. 2
NRS 293DY Dissertation Seminar: The seminar series provides opportunities for students to engage in facilitated discussion, achieve program-specific milestones, and share work-in-progress for peer and faculty feedback. In Years 3 and 4, program-specific milestones focus on dissertation writing and project completion along with professional development.  Offered Quarterly in Year 3 and 4.  2
